FAQs
Grass/Turf
Where do I purchase the grass from? Which grass should I use?
You can place any grass/turf in the puppy potty, however our potty is best suited to turf from Bunnings and other retailers listed here. They sell it starting at $7 a piece and its excellent quality.
Depending on which state you are in will depend on how you fit the turf into your potty (i.e. VIC & SA Bunnings sell different size turf to NSW, ACT, QLD & WA). Please see our turf guide for further info.
Which soil should I use?
We recommend using standard potting mix as it provides good drainage and supports healthy grass growth. For those concerned about their dog eating the soil, choose a natural, non-treated potting mix without added fertilisers or chemicals. Most hardware or garden stores offer organic soil options that are safe for pets. Always check the product label to ensure it's free from harmful additives.
Why does Real Grass Puppy Potty not provide the grass?
The quick answer; because we want you to save a FORTUNE! It is much cheaper (up to seven times cheaper) for you to buy it direct from the suppliers who have it readily available. We have always been, and always will be about offering solutions to our customers rather than focusing on maximising profit. Why pay $40-50 for a piece of turf when you can buy it for as low as $7? How long will the grass last before I have to change it?
It totally depends on you (and your dog!). Some people go full green thumb with grow lights and re-seeding patches, others do a bit of basic upkeep, and some just let nature do its thing.
On average though, most customers get 2–3 months out of each turf. That’s a rough average across everyone – from first-timers to lawn legends. It’s not a guarantee, although we have had some customers tell us theirs has lasted up to 6 months or longer.
That said, if it’s indoors or not getting much love, it could last closer to 2–4 weeks. Things like sunlight, drainage, your climate, how often your dog uses it, and the condition of the turf when you buy it all play a part.
If you want to get the most out of your grass, check out our top tips.
How do I cut the turf to fit my potty?
If you need to cut the turf itself to fit your potty, using a serrated knife (i.e. a steak knife) is super easy and the easiest way. Other options are garden secateurs. Want to see the best way to fit depending on your turf size? Check our guide here.
How do I cut the grass when it grows?
Simply trim it using scissors or garden shears. Since the area is small, it’s quick and easy to maintain.
I live in the ACT and Bunnings have a slow supply of turf in the winter due to our climate. Can I get turf anywhere else?
Yes, many of our ACT customers during winter use another supplier called ‘CanTurf’, who supply turf all year round, even in the colder months.
Please view our Turf Guide for further information.
Why do Bunnings and other retailers say out of stock when I check online?
Turf is a live plant and without soil it will eventually die. With this in mind, Bunnings and other retailers do not offer online purchasing, unless ordering in bulk.
Individual pieces are sold in-store in their nurseries and to keep it fresh, they have it delivered regularly with a quick turn-over. We recommend calling the store beforehand to check stock levels or time when the next delivery is.
Setup
How do I attach the wheels?
Turn the Grassifier upside down and place it flat on the ground.
Push each wheel firmly into the holes on each corner, until they go all the way in.
⚠️ Important: the base must be flat - inserting wheels while holding it in the air will feel very hard.
How does the drainage system work?
The Real Grass Puppy Potty: Grassifier® uses an elevated, ventilated platform with a built-in engineered slopes that guide liquid into a hidden catchment tray. This keeps the turf drier, improves airflow, and stops waste from pooling around the roots and soil.
What is the Grassifier made of?
The Grassifier is built from premium ABS polymer and features our protected, innovative design. This combination ensures durability, easy maintenance, and longer life for your real turf.
What size does it come in?
The RGPP: Grassifier® comes in one universal size. It’s suitable for dogs of any size. Check our Turf Guide regarding the most common turf suppliers and how their turf best fits (we have made it super easy!).
If you prefer an even larger area, or multiple zones, you can purchase two or more and place them next to each other - this is possible with their 360 degree turning wheels with brakes on them.
Size: Universal - suitable for all dogs.
Length: 86cm (internal approx. 81cm)
Width: 66cm (internal approx. 61cm)
Height: 13cm (internal approx. 9cm)
How should I set the Grassifier up outside?
Our Grassifier has been purpose-built with a patent-pending drainage and airflow system to keep turf alive longer. To get the best results, we recommend treating it like a small patch of lawn:
- Place a piece of plastic potty liner in the base (cut some holes to allow for drainage).
- Add about 2 cm of potting mix/soil.
- Lay your turf slab on top.
This setup allows water and urine to drain effectively while the Grassifier’s innovative design promotes airflow and drainage underneath — reducing odours, flushing waste away, and keeping the grass healthier for longer.
For drainage options: if possible, remove the tray so the Grassifier can drain freely underneath. If you prefer to catch runoff (e.g. on a balcony), you can use the included tray inserted beneath the Grassifier. For most convenience, leaving the tray out is recommended, as you won’t need to keep emptying it.
If I don't use the catchment tray, will the water or liquid draining from the Grassifier damage/stain my surface under the potty?
As long as you water the turf frequently, what drains underneath is similar to just dirty water like any plant would drain. We recommend throwing some water under the potty every few days to keep things fresh though, as with anything!
Alternatively, use the Grassifier's included tray insert to catch any run off and empty as required.
How should I set the Grassifier up inside?
We recommend following the same setup tips (outlined here), however you should use the provided catchment tray at all times if used indoors, to catch any run-off from excess liquid or urine.
Please be sure to empty the catchment tray before it reaches the "max-fill" indicator line.
Will anything leak out of the potty if I place it inside?
As long as you have the included catchment tray inserted, there will be no leakage from your Grassifier.
Do the wheels have brakes on them?
Yes, our wheels move in 360 degrees and have brakes to prevent the potty from moving.
What is the easiest way to replace the turf?
- Use disposable gloves
- Use an old serrated steak knife to cut the turf into two smaller pieces
- Lift the two pieces of cut turf straight into a nearby positioned bin
- Lift up the potty liner containing any remaining soil and empty into your nearby bin
- Use a small bin with wheels, or a trolley to transport the bin/turf easily over longer distances
General
Does the Grassifier come with any guarantees?
Yes - many! We firmly believe in delivering a product we are proud of and take pride in.
We guarantee a quality and fit for purpose product.
Why should I use Real Grass Puppy Potty instead of other options? What are the other options?
1. Grass subscriptions or "one-off" services are costly to set up, mostly made overseas with plastic, and designed for turf that only lasts 1-2 weeks, requiring frequent, expensive replacements—about five times the price of turf from Bunnings or garden centers.
2. Many overpriced, complex systems overwhelm you with information, but finding a safe, comfortable toilet area for your pup is simple and doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive.
3. Artificial grass and puppy pads are unhygienic, difficult to clean, and confuse dogs, delaying toilet training. Real grass is instinctively preferred and easier for dogs to distinguish from other surfaces.
4. We are the original creators of this innovation, and have proudly disrupted the market offering a budget friendly, sustainable option. Our new patent-pending Grassifier takes this innovation even further — built with high-quality, durable materials and designed to keep turf alive longer through its unique drainage and airflow system. Affordable, practical, and trusted by tens of thousands of customers across Australia, we remain fuelled by our obsession with customer experience rather than maximising profit at your expense.
