Turf guide

Where to buy turf, state by state

One Grassifier takes one piece of turf, and a piece costs approx. $7. Piece sizes differ by state, so here is what your local supplier sells and the one cut that makes it fit.

Before you go

Three things worth knowing

Buy it in person, not online

Turf is a live plant with no soil under it, so retailers turn it over fast and sell it from the nursery rather than the website. It will almost always read as out of stock online - Bunnings only list it there for bulk orders. Ring the store and ask what has come in this week.

One potty, one piece

The Grassifier is built to take turf from anywhere in Australia. Wherever you are, one Grassifier is usually one piece. Depending on your supplier you may be left with an off-cut, and the guide below tells you exactly where to cut.

Or grow it yourself

You can grow a piece from seed for a couple of dollars. Climate and how you grow it decide the pace - two to three weeks is typical. We filmed ours doing it - see grow your own.

Questions

The ones we get asked

Why do you not just supply the turf?

Because you would be paying us several times what it costs at the nursery. A piece is approx. $7 locally. Posted to you on a subscription it is $40 to $50, every time, forever. We would rather you kept the difference.

Why does it say out of stock when I check online?

Turf is a live plant. Retailers keep it moving so it stays fresh, and they sell it from the nursery rather than the website - Bunnings only list it online for bulk orders. Call the store to check what has arrived, or when the next delivery lands.

I am in the ACT and Bunnings is slow over winter. Anywhere else?

CanTurf in Fyshwick supply all year round, including through the colder months. A lot of our Canberra customers use them from about May.

How long does a piece last?

Up to two to three months on average, depending on light, drainage, climate, how often your dog uses it and how you look after it. That is an average rather than a promise - the drainage system is what buys you the months instead of a fortnight.

Ready for a real patch of grass?

The Grassifier holds a real piece of turf and keeps it alive for up to 2-3 months on average. No subscriptions. Not ever.
