• Puppies need to go every 30–60 minutes when they’re young
• Take them to the same toilet spot each time
• Always reward them immediately when they go in the right place, give them lots of praise (over the top praise!)

Tip: Consistency builds confidence. Puppies want to please – they just need clarity.

• One of the most common mistakes is switching between materials (like we did). We started on fake grass, then went to pee pads, and everything else you can imagine, trying to get something to work. This only confused our puppy and sent us insane in the meantime
  
• Dogs learn by smell and feel. If you’re training indoors, the surface you use now is what your pup will associate with "going potty" and into adulthood
• Even if you do persist, having a dog which associates with going to the potty on fake surfaces that feel similar to carpet, mats or tiles, makes it difficult in their adult life to know that when it is toilet time, that means outside, not just at your house but anywhere else you visit too

• Real, natural grass is instinctively familiar to them
• Avoids confusion with carpets or mats; by engaging their sense of smell and touch, they can tell the difference much easier
• Real grass absorbs and breaks down the dog pee, which prevents mess and smell. Not only easier on your nose, but it entices the pup back to the same area
• They can easily, much quicker, associate by touch and smell the area for its purpose

• Punishing your puppy after accidents; we know, it can be extremely frustrating but remember they are only babies, they don't understand. Punishing them is not fair, but it will also scare them into "going potty" anywhere and make it a longer process
• Getting discouraged after an accident; remember, accidents will happen and are expected due to their little bladder or maybe a lapse in concentration due to being a baby. They will pick it up though and accidents will stop. How long depends on how you train them and what sort of potty you give them
• Giving up thinking it is impossible, or being inconsistent; you have to break through the barrier, just when it feels like it'll never happen, it'll just click and both you and your pup will never look back
• Not understanding your pup; remember, they want to please you, they just need to know how. Be persistent, consistent and once they know what you want, they will do it every time without fail
